Police intercept 5kg of heroin valued at Sh15m along Nakuru-Nairobi highway, arrest two Kenyan women

Two Kenyan women were Friday arrested while trafficking five kilos of heroin from Kampala to Mombasa.

The first woman in her 50s identified as Elizabeth Akinyi Mboga was nabbed on Friday morning by Anti-Narcotics police in a sweeping operation by officers along Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

Elizabeth was arrested together with Ann Achieng Anyanga who had travelled to Kampala to bring the narcotics from Tanzania using Modern Coast Bus.

The duo was arrested by the officers after receiving a tip from flying squad officers based in Naivasha. Ann was arrested after detectives established that her travel documents indicated a suspicious travel pattern. She left the country in early August through Lunga Lunga border only to emerge Friday morning at Busia border point.

The detectives searched their belongings and discovered a carton full of plastic mops in which the narcotics were concealed in their hollow spaces.

According to a source who did not want to be named, Elizabeth has recruited many smugglers to travel to West African countries and Asian countries, many who were arrested and are facing life jail terms while others have been executed. Among the many arrested smugglers Emelda who was arrested in Nigeria and George who was arrested in Indonesia.

A confidant also disclosed that Elizabeth worked for Nigerians many who are based in Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania.

She previously smuggled drugs to various countries and was at some point arrested in Pakistan while in possession of drugs. Elizabeth continues to target economically challenged persons in the society and convince them to do the drug runs at a small fee while she pockets the big share of the profits.

It also emerged that about 15 members of Uganda Cranes Football team were aboard the bus headed for a football match against Harambee Stars in Kenya.

One of the players who did not want to be mentioned said he was saddened by the delay that occurred as the two who were being pursued but was happy about the arrest.

While confirming the incident, Head of Anti-Narcotics Unit Hamisi Massa said that the arrest was a major breakthrough in stopping trans-border narcotic trafficking.

Cases of drug trafficking have been on the rise in the country even as most traffickers avoid the mainly used routes in their business. Police say they now use roads as opposed to airports to carry out their business. The most commonly trafficked narcotics from Tanzania and through Uganda is heroin. Cocaine is also trafficked from the two countries. Kenya made the second biggest seizure last month and arrested two suspects who were linked to the 100 kilograms of cocaine valued at Sh598 million disguised as sugar.

The suspects including a Briton were released by the courts and ordered to deposit Sh70 million with similar surety to secure their freedom.

The US government has complained some drugs seized in their country originate Kenya and called for action to stop the trend.

US secretary of states John Kerry arrives in Nairobi on Sunday evening on August 21 and is expected to among other issues discuss the issue of drugs, electoral reforms, South Sudan crisis and Somalia.
